Event: Earth History and Planetary Science Contextualized Content Course (Earth Science 2), Week 1

Jul 31, 2006
Aug 3, 2006

7/31-8/3, 8/7-8/10, location TBA: 8 full-day sessions.

Middle and high school teachers of science. Priority given to Boston Public Schools teachers and pre-service teachers at BSP partner institutions (UMB, NEU, BPS).

This course focuses on the study of geology and the fossil record as they apply to the study of the Earth's history, long-term change processes, and current composition. The course also includes such topics as the solar system, lunar phases, and modern satellite technology. The course is contextualized to middle school curriculum materials including FOSS "Earth History" and "Planetary Science" modules. Middle school activities, which could be adapted for use at the high school level, will be used to illustrate fundamental concepts of Earth history and planetary science as outlined in the Massachusetts State Science Frameworks grades 6-8. Students participate in laboratory exercises drawn from national science standards-based middle school instructional materials, which will allow them to review these teaching materials and methods and discuss research-based strategies for communicating with students. While this course is primarily designed to support middle school teachers of science, high school teachers of science are welcome to enroll in this course.
