7/5-7/7, 7/10-7/14, University of Massachusetts Boston: 8 full-day sessions.

Middle and high school teachers of science. Priority given to Boston Public Schools teachers and pre-service teachers at BSP partner institutions (UMB, NEU, BPS).

This course offers an in-depth exploration of the biological principles, content knowledge, and pedagogical strategies needed for teaching human biology at the middle and high school levels. The course takes a human biology approach to studies of physiological mechanisms, organ systems, cell biology, genetics, and cellular energetics. Topics and approaches will be based on State and National Science Standards, as well as on middle and high school level instructional materials including STC "Human Biology" and BSCS Biology - A Human Approach. The course consists of lectures, laboratory activities, problem-solving exercises, classroom discussion, and reading and other assignments. Emphasis is placed on gaining a rich understanding of biological concepts, which will inform the use of hands-on, inquiry-based teaching strategies.
